I’m running for the SCC board of trustees because there is a void in our community now when it comes to higher education. Iowa Wesleyan was a staple in our community for over 180 years, and those that wanted to go on to higher education had an accessible option here in town. Since Iowa Wesleyan closed, that is no longer the case. SCC already has a place in Henry County, but there are hardly any classes being offered there - that needs to change. I'm committed to spending my time on the board to expand rural outreach and using existing resources to offer more classes.
We need a stronger trade program in our community. Southeast Iowa is in desperate need of skilled blue collar workers, and SCC can provide that. We need to partner with local businesses to give students real world experience so they can land a good job after school.
I believe college should be affordable not only for students, but taxpayers too. That means following responsible budgeting practices and making the tough call to cut programs we can't afford. If elected, I will never support any measure that would increase the burden on taxpayers. And as Chairman of my township, I am proud of my record for fiscal responsibility, reporting a 10% budget surplus during my tenure.
Coop joined his local township board in January 2022 to champion lower property taxes and advocate for improved budgeting. He holds the distinction of being the youngest elected official in the State of Iowa when he took office. During his tenure, he lead initiatives to cut local spending by over 10%, without cutting services to taxpayers.
In addition to his official work, he has spent two sessions clerking at the statehouse, and has used his influence to help ensure Iowa's elected officials remain accountable to the people that hired them. He Chairs the Southeast Iowa Young Republicans and is an active member of the YRNF National Committee, where he has helped organize volunteers nationally, and advised new candidates on best campaign practices, to ensure young leaders are active in the political process.
